Straight out the lab
Any Drum & Bass fan worth their salt will know the name Heist as one of the hottest properties in the scene. A versatile and highly talented producer whose musical career has gone from strength to strength in the last few years, being enlisted by Goldie into the legendary Rufige Kru to engineer the massive ‘Malice In Wonderland’ album, Heist has also had huge success on labels such as Full Cycle, Digital Soundboy and, of course, Co-Lab Recordings. 2008 looks just as bright for the Essex based superstar as he stares the future in the face by joining the D&B
Arena artist agency, preparing for another Rufige Kru project and works towards his own solo LP on Co-Lab later in the year.
Conversely, Benny is the man behind the scenes keeping the whole operation ticking, dealing with the day to day running of Co-Lab Recordings and the associated labels and spending a vast portion of his time working closely with the artists involved. An accomplished DJ in his own right, Benny has been a permanent fixture on the Midlands D&B circuit for over 13 years alongside label artist and close friend Aries. His ambition for the labels and love of the music is unquestionable as he continually strives to raise the profile of the Co-Lab brand and keep the quality control of the releases high.
The History of Co-Lab
Rewind for a moment back to 2002, Benny gets handed a CD by Sam Caution full of music by a little known producer called Heist. One track in particular stood out and Benny called Heist the next day to let him know how much he loved ‘Latin Nights’ and that he would be cutting it at the famous dubplate studio Music House. From that point on, every track that Heist finished would be burned to CD and posted up to sunny Stourbridge for feedback until he and Benny decided to come together and release ‘Salsa Jive’ and ‘Company 7’ as the first release on
their joint label venture, Co-Lab Recordings. Since then the pair have released a steady stream of fantastic music, running with a team of people who all come together to make the whole operation work, and added two sub-labels – Calypso Muzak and Pure Vibez – to help take the pressure of the increasingly hectic Co-Lab release schedule!
“Together we have compiled and mixed this album live aided by the lyrical flow of Funsta MC and it is a showcase of where the labels are right now. This album is dedicated to all the many people who have supported us, continue to work with us or have helped us in any way at any point of time. We hope you enjoy it!”

Heist - All I Want
They say that all good things come to those who wait so following the success of HEIST's smashers DONT HOLD BACK on Full Cycle + GO TO WORK to mark Co-Lab's 10th release he reverts to his STRIDER guise to deliver what looks set to be his 3rd hit in a row!
SUCKA BEATZ starts with tongue in cheek vocals and bleeps wich make way for super tight beatz and catchy basslines. This tune just rolls and rolls and switches up + down throughout to keep the dance guessing! Rewound 3 times on its first Radio 1 airing by Grooverider this is a guaranteed winner!
On the flip HEIST comes with yet another slice of original funk with ALL I WANT. So diiferent than anything else about at the moment. Packed full of flava and a wicked vocoded vocal.
These tunes have been been smacked wordwide by BRYAN GEE, GROOVERIDER, FABIO, ANDY C, HYPE, FRICTION, GOLDIE, PENDULUM, BAILEY, FLIGHT, CRISSY CRISS, DIE, RUFFFSTUFF, BASSLINE SMITH + anyone else lucky enough to have them!

Malfoy - Slytherin Soundclash
Calypso Muzak is back with its fifth instalment. To celebrate this bench mark it’s remix time and we have enlisted our friend Connecta (Formation, XS Records) from Manheim, Germany to go in on The Force’s What Happens Here? On the flip we have Malfoy’s Slytherin Soundclash.
Connecta has been making waves on the scene since his first release on World Of Drum and Bass with the massive Botox and followed that standard with Run Da Track, Parties Over and releases on XS and Advisory Records. His simple but effective style has more than done justice to the original and has been smashing up dance floors worldwide!
After the success of Bear Hunter on Calypso last year Malfoy has hit the spot yet again with another rolling master class. Ultra tight production with a grimey bassline that goes straight for the jugular. He definitely has his own unique sound and that’s what we love!
Both tracks have been on heavy rotation and played by the likes of Ruffstuff, Bassline Smith, Die, Sappo, Crissy Criss, DJ SS, Nicky Blackmarket, DJ Kane, Heist, Majistrate, Nicol, Lomax, Connecta + Benny and Aries.

Majistrate - Cake Face
Here we go with the next installment from Calypso Muzak where we welcome not one, not two but three brand new artists to the camp. Majistrate (Bingo, Ganja and Nam Music) Ruffstuff (Movement, V Recordings, Chronic Records) and MC Funsta are all well established within the Dnb scene on their own merits but come together for the first time on vinyl for us. Some exclusive bizniss!
First up is Purge Dem. Three of the legendary Kool FM’s finest lock horns in the studio to deliver a reggae vibe vocal intro which switches on the drop to a jump up flex which is sure to get your kangaroo step on.
On the flip we have Cake Face. This tune has been doing the rounds for a while and Majistrate has definitely executed it with the Jump up purists in mind. Ragga vocals, steppin breaks and grimy rolling bass that pounds away at your skull in true call and answer fashion!
Both tracks have had great support and been played by the likes of DJ Hype, Zinc, Ruffstuff, Clipz, Die, Gen Dub, Ruffstuff, Majistrate, Nicol, DJ Kane, Sappo, The Force, Connecta, Aries + Benny and also a favourite on Kool FM London.
